Feel Better Friday

Here are some things to make you feel better this Friday, whether you are feeling under the weather (like me) or just need a pick me up.

I drink tea whether I am sick or not. But lately it feels like the mug never leaves my hand. Some of my favourites when I am sick are: Cold 911, Bravissimo and Mother's Little Helper.

A green smoothie is a great way to get vitamins and nutrients when you are feeling sick. And you can't go wrong with some homemade chicken soup.

A good book or some Netflix always helps to pass the time. I have been binging on Heartland of all shows.

For me when I am sick I am always cold. I need a cozy sweater and some socks to stay warm!

What do you do to feel better?

Weekend Food Snapshots

I went to put together a Weekend Snapshots post and realized all I had taken photos of this weekend was food. Typical me. Here is what I have been making and eating lately.
Brownie Cupcakes with Cookie Dough Frosting. One was more then enough sugar for the day, but oh so good!

One of my favourite sandwiches: prosciutto, bocconcini, arugula with olive oil, balsamic and honey dressing on focaccia

A green smoothie to balance out the cupcake. This one has a herbal tea base, spinach, avocado, pineapple and frozen mangos. It might be my favourite combination yet!

My first attempt at homemade bagels. I wasn't 100% happy with the recipe. I will have to try out more before I share it with you.

Some Greek yogurt with raspberries and homemade granola (oats, almonds, chocolate chips bound with agave).

What did you eat this weekend?

Green Smoothie Challenge: Take 2

I tried in April to do the Green Smoothie Challenge from Simple Green Smoothies but I didn't make it through the entire month. I got sick and just didn't feel like having smoothies everyday. I decided to start the challenge again this week for the month of July. I am really hoping I can stick to it and have a smoothie a day. I will most likely be drinking mine for breakfast and am not sure yet if I am going to blend it the night before or throw everything into my blender (minus the liquids) the night before so I just have to blend and go in the mornings. Anyone have any suggestions for quickly making smoothies in the mornings?

This is my favourite green smoothie recipe but I love how the challenge emails you shopping lists and a ton of new recipes to try. What is your favourite recipe?  Let me know if you decide to join the challenge as well!

After I wrote this I was on Flipboard and I came across this article. It talks about the health benefits of spinach and how it is good for your brain. All the more reason to join me and drink your greens!

Green Smoothie Challenge - Storing Greens

I started doing the Green Smoothie Challenge  at the beginning of April and then I got sick and stopped for about a week (I really just didn't want to eat anything) but I am back at it and I am loving how energized I feel. They are tastey and full of delicious goodness.

The one thing I found was that I wasn't able to go through a bunch of greens fast enough before it started going bad and that washing greens everyday was time consuming and annoying. I found a simple solution to both those problems that I thought I would share with you.

Take your green (in my case Kale) and break it into small pieces.
 Wash and drain your greens
Dry throughly. (It would probably be faster to use a lettuce spinner...which I don't own...the joys of student living. haha a clean kitchen towel did just fine)
Store greens in a ziplock bag with a paper towel placed inside to capture moister and keep greens fresh longer. Also if you find you have way too many greens you can simply throw the ziplock bag into the freezer.

Hope this helps!
