Currently Reading: Lean In

Okay, so I know I am WAY behind the curve on this one, but I finally got around to reading Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg.  I found the book to be easy to read and there was a lot that I could relate to. While there were parts in the book that I found contradicting or I wasn't sure of, overall it gave me a lot to think about and it opened my eyes to some ways I am holding myself back. I think that this book is an important book for all young women to read. It really opens your eyes and gives you something to think about. As someone who will be entering the work force in a couple of years I found it helpful, especially the parts about holding yourself back because you might have a family one day. It gave a great perspective on the work/life balance and the importance of finding a mentor that fits for you not just because you think they would be a great mentor. While working at my internship this past summer, I got to attend a Women in Entrepreneurship Discussion. I really enjoyed getting to hear from female entrepreneurs about what it meant to be a woman in business and what they felt needed to change. There were a lot of really great take home messages from that talk which mirrored a lot of what Sandberg writes about in her book. I think that by talking about these issues we can shed some light on them and begin to make change. I would love to see these ideas be taught/discussed in all business schools. While I believe it is important for women to read books like Lean In, I think it is equally as important for men to read them as well.

Have you read Lean In? What are your thoughts on it?

9 to 5

Today is the last day of my summer internship. It is going to be weird not going to work on Monday and I am really going to miss all of my new friends at the office. The internship was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. But I am ready to go back to school in a couple of short weeks (get ready for some back to school posts in the near future.) What I now feel like I understand from working 9-5:

- The feeling you get when your inbox hits 0

- Weekends. As a student I never felt like I truly owned my weekends. I usually have to study or  if I am really lucky I have an exam.  I also didn't have class everyday so some weekdays felt more like weekends then weekends did.

- Commuting sucks. Seriously. Being stuck in a car or on the subway for hours everyday is not fun.

I learnt a lot this summer during my internship but I couldn't resist posting this silly list that I felt a lot of people could relate too. I am excited to see what company I end up with next summer for an internship. They are not only great learning opportunities but they also help determine if you actually really do like what you think you want to do for a career.

What is your internship experience?

The Internship

No not the movie, although I would still like to see it. Is it any good? I started my summer internship almost a month ago now. Its hard to believe how quickly time flies!

I have just started to feel like I fit and have something resembling a routine. It took a while to get used to early mornings again and a regular schedule. I am just starting to feel normal (probably the whole 21 days to create a habit thing). I know that I have started to let things slide as I got used to my new routines (this blog, working out, eating healthy). I am ready to start getting back on track.

I am loving spending time in the working world and seeing how my degree might be put to good use one day haha. Its been a fun eye opening experience and I cannot wait to learn more. I have finally got my foot in on some really cool projects and have really started looking forward to work everyday.

What was your first internship or where would your dream internship be?
